Knitted Knockers is a charitable organisation in America started as a short term project by a blogger working for a yarn company. The Knitted Knockers are handmade, comfortable prosthetic breasts for mastectomy patients. It was so successful that a website was established just for Knitted Knockers and other groups have joined in. Knitted Knockers has a Ravelry group and there is a Facebook page that has updates on the project. Recently the Burwood branch of the CWA started to make and distribute their own Knockers for the many Australian women who have had a mastectomy and cannot or don’t want to use silicone implants. The Knockers are made with cotton yarn and are light and soft.
At the Guild’s November Sit and Knit Julia from the Country Women’s Association (CWA), Knitted Knockers Australia visited and let us know about their Knitted Knockers project. If you would like to help by knitting a Knocker you can get a pattern and details from the Knitted Knockers website or contact Julia through the Burwood CWA if you are in Australia. Julia can send you a pattern with specifications and yarn suggestions for Australian users.
