Archive for July, 2013

From 2014 to 2018 Australia will commemorate the Anzac Centenary, marking 100 years since Australia’s involvement in the First World War. The 5000 POPPIES project is for crafters  who would like to contribute a handmade red poppy to be included in a field of 5000 poppies to be publicly displayed in Melbourne on ANZAC Day 2015. The 5000 poppies will be a community tribute recognising the service of Australian servicemen and women in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. There will be an initial display of the poppies in Fed Square in November 2013 for Remembrance Day. To be included in the initial display at Fed Square, poppies should be submitted by 30 September.

Lynn Berry and Margaret Knight are the two fibre lovers behind the project and they are hosting workshops at Fed Square on the 2nd Monday of every month from 12noon until 2pm with the next one scheduled for the 12 August. Visit the 5000 POPPIES blog for progress reports and for free poppy patterns for knit and crochet poppies. If you have some red wool in your stash (we know you do) you are halfway to participating in this fibre project.

At our July Sit and Knit Nola told us about an exhibition currently on at Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen by artist Siri Hayes, that uses wool in ways you wouldn’t expect. Called Siri Hayes: Back to Nature Scene, the exhibition consists of textile works and photographs. Melbourne artist Siri Hayes is better known for her photographs but she also has a background in craft and has worked with the gardeners at Heide to procure plants to use to hand-dye her wool. One of the textile artworks is strung between persimmon trees in the garden, so it is literally a part of nature, another is a woven circular rug made using the yarn dyed with plants from the extensive gardens at Heide.

If you haven’t visited Heide this exhibition would make a great introduction to this lovely museum, and if you are really keen, there is a yarn bombing workshop happening in the morning on the 20 July with Siri Hayes at Heide. (The cost is $55. Call (03) 9850 1500 to book.) The Siri Hayes exhibition runs until the 28 July 2013.
